By popular demand--Costa Cetacea Dolphin, Whale, Ocean, River Friendly Places to Stay in Drake Bay and Osa. Hotels, Lodges, Inns, Cabinas, Resorts, Tent Camps.
While we realize here at Costa Cetacea that no one is perfect and every place can do better, a few accommodations are way towards the positive end of the spectrum. Green areas, preferably forest, are a must, no cutting down giant trees for more rooms. Serious efforts towards proper waste water treatment and contaminants disposal, especially close to ocean or waterways. Respect for the incredible beach front of the Osa, no permanent guest rooms, bars, restaurants within the public zone within 50 meters from the tide.
So here they are, Costa Cetacea's most dolphin and ocean friendly accommodations in Drake Bay and north Osa.
The Rainforest Chalet
Whoa. Basically your own fat ecopad in the forest. This is the real thing. Drake Bay's premier place to do the wild thing. You are lucky if you can make a reservation, best to try ahead of time. Small scale and total quality. Tracie and Gian, the owners, have learned a thing or two living on site for many years. Their world famous Night Tour was the first in Costa Rica and for the lucky few that stay there, is done on site.
Casa Corcovado
Owner Steve Lil is a Guru of Osa conservation. He was involved in creating Corcovado National Park and founded the Corcovado Foundation. His place, acting as a buffer adjoining the park, protects a massive chunk of forest and is truly striving for sustainability, setting the example for all other hotels in Costa Rica.
La Paloma Lodge
Protecting the largest chunk of forest along the beaches in Drake Bay, this place stands out among its competetors for really trying to do things right. Owners Sue and Mike Kambach are actively involved in working to make their hotel sustainable as possible. Mike was a founding member of the Corcovado Foundation, and the lodge continues to provide the organization with lots of assistance.
Caletas Lodge
Protecting a very big piece of rainforest along the coast of Punta and Playas Caletas, owners David and Yolanda have slowly built the most charming eco lodge along this fantastic stretch of wild beachs. Hydro and solar power for much of the hotel helps keep things green.
Hotel Finca Marisia
This very affordable place is set on regenerating pasture with some nice forest, helping to protect the watersheds of Drake Bay, not contaminate them. The owners Almudena and Miguel Bustos, and Juan, bring culture and warmth to the Drake Bay area and their guests. They are setting the most positive dolphin friendly example near the Drake Bay area for small mom and pop businesses.
One thing some of these places should work on is not serving canned tuna or shrimp as netting this food is killing a lot of marine life. We can all do better.
