There is a mysterious lost Indian Fortress hidden in the dense forests of the peaks, and Captain Sir Francis Drake may well have hidden big treasure in a cave along the towering cliffs of the island that looks like a violin when seen from sea. We check it our from a dolphin eye view, at sea level in a sea kayak.
The ocean cliffs of Isla Violin look like Costa Rica's version of Hawaii's Kauai Na Pali Valley Coast, steep and green, but here there is full on rainforest with macaws, jaguars, tapirs and eagles. There are empty beaches, caves, and stunning views.
Just off Isla Violin, a short paddle seaward, are the towering Bird Rocks and maze of rocky channels, islets and marine wildlife like humpback whales and spotted dolphin. The rocks have some crazy big trees on them and at least five kinds of sea birds nest here, including brown boobies and magnificent frigate birds.
The back side of Isla Violin is the biggest mangrove forest in Central America and well worth a check. WeŽll paddle through twisting turning gnarled forest tunnels and mazes. Then when the heat and bugs and immensity of it set in we take off back in the boat to check out the massive river system before heading back to Drake Bay.
Oh, there are also some nice waves for sea kayak surfing.
Our most excellent Spirt Sea Kayaks not only surf great, they pack in our little motherships so we can motor right to the best spots in this huge place, and then put you in the sea kayak. Vamos.
