FAQ

Big or small we can dial you in to anchoring in Drake Bay, Costa Rica.

Dear Captain, crew and owners,

I am an American Costa Rican with nearly 40 years of knowing Costa Rica.  I first played in the foam in 1972 at Jaco Beach.  As you know times they are a changing, there has been quite a bit of growth.

That might be why I´ve holed up in Drake Bay.  We still have that wild early 90s Costa Rica feel.  I have been spending sea time here  since the mid 80s and began working on the ocean in the early 90s.  Before there were tourists, we just came with boards and spears and you know the rest.

With Costa Cetacea  I focus now on blue water pelagic.  I can arrange fine bottom crawling but we all about the offshore big blue open ocean.  Pretty much everyday  we jump into 30 to 50 meter vis with big beasts you just do not see at the popular scuba sites at Isla Caņo Biological Reserve.  Or surround the yacht with loads of dolphins, whales, baitballs, marlin or sails, turtles and such for photos, videos and dry people.  Again the vis is always above 30 meters.  There is an upwelling about 20 SW of Drake Bay where the action goes off like no place I know of.  No problem if the crew wants to bring spears, cameras, scooters or other water toys.  Kids love it.  I think its the best tour in Costa Rica.

I also do an excellent slide show video lecture on board.  The theme is Costa Rican marine life and aquatic resources, especially the Osa pelagic ecosystem, dolphin and whale behaviors, the tuna dolphin association and resulting purse seine netting, and local freshwater resources.  I have been a certified scuba diver for 30 years.  As a marine biologist/naturalist and PADI diving instructor for 20 years, I have spend a lot of time in and studying the sea in Costa Rica and I very much enjoy sharing that information with interested groups.  I have added new dolphins to Costa Rica´s list and have discovered new behaviors unknown to science every year for more than 15 years.  I have published hundreds of photos and articles to national and international press educating the world about conserving Costa Rica's marine life. I have featured on the discovery channel's animal planet and many other channels and programs.  My video footage has appeared there as well.  I guide and lecture for the the top visiting national and international scientists and film crews and that has blessed me with a awesome big picture view of the waters and wildlife of Costa Rica.   My wife and I have also crewed on sail and motor yatchs of a great variety of sizes around the Caribbean windwards and Pacific Costa Rica. The group will come away with a greater understanding of our waters and the need to, and how to, conserve them.

We also provide kayaks and guides for the Rio Agujas right at the anchorage in Drake Bay.  This cool, clear, pebble, sand and rock river canyon is the thing to do after any kind of session in the sea.  Shaded, super scenic forest and full of wildlife.  The first kilometer is for all ages for a one or two hour session with great pools and waterfalls.  Asending past that is great but for surfer types or other athletes.  I bring the yaks to the docks in the rivermouth, so its an easy drop off for any tenders.

If crew wants a surf with no crowds well we can take care of that.  I can get pangas or get them dialed in from their tenders.  Rio Claro left point, Rincon A frame beach break, Ganado, left point and beach break, Sierpe rivermouth sand bar lefts and rights.  All reached only by boat or very long hikes as in likely no one else out.  On the way home a little snapper, jack or roosterfish bang bang for din din.

With the help of my wife Vanessa and some friends we can also take care of arranging flights, taxis, dining, massages, land tours and more for yachts at the Drake anchorage.  We can also put together a really sweet beach party barbecue at at postcard perfect wild forested beach reached only by trail or boat, in sight of the anchorage.  Guitars, beach fire, rustic, barefoot, wild style.  My family particularly likes to host groups with other kids.

We understand what the yachting community appreciates when looking for services and we find it a great pleasure as well as educational to spend time with this very unique and special clientele.

Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions about anything over here in Costa Rica and I look forward to seeing you drop the hook in Drake Bay sometime in near future.

Pura Vida,
Shawn Larkin
